This is one of my dad's favorite recipes. I remember how happy it made him when my mom would make these.
Several apples peeled, cored and sliced.
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder (rounded)
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons shortening
2/3 cup milk
Sift dry ingredients. Blend in shortening. Add enough milk to make dough that will stick or hold together.
Roll out and cut into squares about 6 inches square. Pile some of the apples in the center. Sprinkle on top about 1 tablespoon sugar, a little cinnamon, dot of butter. Fold up and pinch well to seal. Sprinkle sugar on top. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a baking pan. Add 1 tablespoon sugar on top, put in 1 cup of water, after the dumplings have been placed on the butter-sugar mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for about 1 hour. Baste often. Serve hot with milk sweetened with sugar and nutmeg.
